Sponsor Oregon Parenting Education and Support Conference '08
Help advance the field of parent education.
The Need
Neither our present educational system nor current public funding is designed to support the fact that children’s success in school and life is significantly determined before they ever enter kindergarten. By the time most funding and programs kick in to help children, many children are already behind socially, emotionally, and cognitively, and likely will never catch up.
The Value of Investment in Parent Education
Parents are their child’s first and most important teachers and role models. Investing in parent education helps assure that children will be free of abuse and neglect, able to succeed in school, and be a contributing member of our society.
Investing early in a child’s life saves taxpayers money, increases the quality of our future workforce, and improves the quality of life for our communities.
Childhood is full of many wonderful moments: A baby’s first step…A toddler’s first word… A child’s first day at school…and we mustn’t take such moments for granted. While every child deserves the chance to grow up happy, healthy and safe, not every child is given that opportunity. Good parenting is a key to making these moments a reality for every child.
Savings
Studies have shown that for every $1 spent on early childhood prevention programs, $7 to $10 in remedial treatment in later life is saved. And yet, public spending is miniscule at age 3 and enormous at 18, when poor outcomes (juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, drug use, etc.) are already evident and the chance of change is slight.
The conference will be held April 28-29, 2008 at the Hilton Eugene & Conference Center, Eugene, Oregon. Your sponsorship of this conference will help to bring together professionals who work with families for dynamic and informative educational and networking opportunities.
Who will be attending?
Approximately 300 attendees are expected, including parent educators, home visitors, mental health professionals, social service professionals, direct service providers, program directors, students, pediatric professionals, early childhood educators, faith based family and children’s pastors, family readiness group facilitators, and others who work with children and families.
